on the necessity of walls

I’m wondering more and more these days whether views on the use of internal full height walls need rethinking. Is it entirely neccessary to have areas hermetically sealed? Of course, it’s easy to imagine when it’s a requirement, but even when it isn’t, it’s the norm to put up immovable barriers which more often than not only serve to disrupt the flow of a building, make it feel cramped, reduce ambient light and increase isolation between people.

I’m not suggesting we live in 1920s idealistic utterly-open-plan houses, but maybe it’s worth trying buildings with less rigid rules, and allowing spaces to be interpreted and used in different manners; allow people to move freely, and not least of all create a feeling of openness without the need of heavy handedly creating enormous floorplans.

rem koolhaas is a bit of a twat, and i hate ummmmm 60% of his stuff but i’m still gonna watch this thing about him. read:

Renowned Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas’ whirlwind career has encompassed filmmaking, journalism, urbanist theory and an array of unique buildings across the globe, so the challenge for this film is finding a form that can contain its subject’s profligate energy. Its response is a hyperactive, information-rich approach that will use any means to illustrate the wild ideas: archival footage, animated diagrams, pixilated collages. It’s an efficient and immersive way of organising diverse material, and before long we’ve covered Koolhaas’ background, interests, design philosophy and workplace dynamics. He’s even explained why it’s so important to understand the context around his aphorism ‘Fuck context.’ The film then relaxes a little to present in-depth explorations of Koolhaas’ signature commissions, including Prada’s epicenter stores and the Casa da Música in Porto. The climax comes with his first skyscraper, the amazing “loop in space” of the CCTV Building in Beijing. — Andrew Langridge

wow that was a lot of fucking words

anyway its a film on today/tomorrow/tuesday so i will watch the tuesday one!

I hate this. Such lazy design.
weird shapes for the sake of weird shapes is most irresponsal and lazy.
basically one thing that combines all of these things is the fucking ORDOS 100 stunt. some inner mongolian shit town has 100 lots which 100 architects design houses for. inevitably it ends in disaster and a veritable storm of awful, contextless design.
IS THERE SOME FUCKING AUTOCAD “HOLYSHITANGLES” BUTTON THESE DAYS!?!

yughgh.
